When I stepped back from Council, I did so with clarity and optimism — not just about where our cities were headed, but about the role planning could play in shaping our future. For over two decades, I’ve worked at the intersection of planning, politics, and community, as a mayor, consultant, and researcher. I’ve seen the power of good planning to create liveable, inclusive, future-ready places. I’ve also seen how easily it can be derailed by short-term thinking — and how costly that can be for clients, communities, and councils alike. Greiss Planning exists to bring clarity, rigour, and steady leadership to the approvals process, so good projects can move forward with confidence.

Welcoming New Leadership

Moments of transition in civic leadership provide an opportunity to reflect on the qualities that strengthen our Council and our city. I would like to congratulate Councillor Masud Khalil on his election as Deputy Mayor for the remainder of the current Council term.

Since his election in 2021, Cr Khalil has demonstrated a clear and consistent commitment to the Campbelltown community. Leadership in local government is built on participation, presence and service. In each of these respects, he has shown dedication.

“His commitment to the celebration of diversity is evident through his role as Chair of Campbelltown’s Multicultural Committee.”
Commitment to Community

Although he has called the Campbelltown region home for almost seven years, Cr Khalil has embraced his adopted city with purpose. He is raising his family here, investing not only in his own future but in the shared future of our community.

He is actively involved in a range of community groups and initiatives, building relationships across cultural, social and civic networks. Such engagement enriches our Council by ensuring that diverse experiences and perspectives are reflected in our deliberations.

Respect within a community is earned through consistency and authenticity. Cr Khalil’s approach has been marked by both.

Celebrating Diversity as Civic Strength

Campbelltown is defined by its diversity. Our multicultural character is not simply demographic. It is expressed in festivals, faith observances, food, language and shared public life.

As Chair of the Multicultural Committee, Cr Khalil has played an important role in fostering this strength. His active participation in cultural events and programs reflects a belief that celebration and inclusion go hand in hand.

He was instrumental in the recent program of events celebrating Ramadan, helping to ensure that these occasions were recognised in a way that brought people together. His advocacy for a diverse program of city events reinforces the principle that belonging is strengthened when communities see themselves reflected in public life.

As the first Deputy Mayor of Bangladeshi descent, he carries this responsibility with pride. He honours his heritage while demonstrating an equally strong commitment to representing the entire Campbelltown community.

The Role of Deputy Mayor

The office of Deputy Mayor carries both symbolic and practical responsibility. It requires professionalism, collaboration and a readiness to represent the city across a range of civic functions.

I am confident that Cr Khalil will fulfil this role with diligence and integrity. His experience, community connections and commitment to inclusion position him well to contribute meaningfully over the coming months.

Reflection

Civic leadership is at its best when it reflects the diversity, aspiration and shared purpose of the community it serves. Councillor Masud Khalil’s election as Deputy Mayor marks not only a personal milestone, but a moment that speaks to the evolving story of Campbelltown. I looked forward to working closely with him over the next 12 months as we continue to serve our city with care, respect and a clear sense of our collective future.
