When I stepped back from Council, I did so with clarity and optimism — not just about where our cities were headed, but about the role planning could play in shaping our future. For over two decades, I’ve worked at the intersection of planning, politics, and community, as a mayor, consultant, and researcher. I’ve seen the power of good planning to create liveable, inclusive, future-ready places. I’ve also seen how easily it can be derailed by short-term thinking — and how costly that can be for clients, communities, and councils alike. Greiss Planning exists to bring clarity, rigour, and steady leadership to the approvals process, so good projects can move forward with confidence.

The Importance of Shared Leadership

Local government is often viewed through the lens of its chief civic office. Yet effective leadership is never exercised alone. It is sustained through partnership, collegiality and shared responsibility.

I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the contribution of Councillor Warren Morrison, who has dutifully fulfilled the role of Deputy Mayor since January 2022. During my first term as Mayor, his steady support has been both valued and appreciated.

The role of Deputy Mayor carries formal responsibilities, but it also carries something less visible yet equally important. It requires presence, reliability and a willingness to represent the city with dignity when called upon.

Visible Commitment to Community

Throughout his tenure as Deputy Mayor, Councillor Morrison has actively represented Campbelltown at community events, business forums, sporting fixtures and cultural celebrations. These occasions may appear ceremonial from a distance, yet they form the connective tissue of civic life.

A Deputy Mayor often stands as the bridge between Council and community organisations. In doing so, he affirms that the work of volunteers, artists, business owners and sporting clubs is seen and valued.

Cr Morrison’s passion for Campbelltown is evident in his engagement. His connection with community leaders and grassroots organisations reflects a deep commitment to place. Representation at this level strengthens trust and reinforces the shared identity of our city.

He is a well-respected leader in our community, and his passion is evident in everything he does.

That observation has been borne out repeatedly over the past year.

Supporting a Broader Civic Agenda

The Deputy Mayor’s role also involves supporting the Mayor in advancing Council’s broader objectives. From community festivals to business engagement and advocacy discussions, Councillor Morrison has contributed to the positive momentum we have sought to build.

Public leadership requires resilience and unity. Differences of opinion will arise in any democratic chamber. Yet the capacity to work constructively, even amidst debate, is a mark of institutional maturity. In this regard, his support has enabled continuity and stability during a significant period for Council.

Continuity Beyond Office

While formal roles may rotate, commitment to community does not conclude with a title. I have no doubt that Councillor Morrison will continue to serve Campbelltown with the same enthusiasm and dedication in his ongoing capacity as a Councillor.

Civic institutions endure because individuals step forward to contribute their time and energy for the benefit of others. Such service deserves recognition.

Reflection

Leadership in local government is shared stewardship. It is built on collaboration, mutual respect and a common purpose to advance the wellbeing of our community. In acknowledging Councillor Warren Morrison’s service as Deputy Mayor, I also acknowledge the broader principle that strong cities are sustained by committed individuals working together. For that contribution, I extend my sincere thanks.
